Top Five Style Mistakes Every Man Should Avoid
We all make style mistakes from time to time (in the noughties I was convinced baggy jeans and grandpa cardigans were my thing) and it can be tough to know what fashion choices we need to avoid.
Are you making a style mistake? Find out if you’re guilty with Mainline Menswear’s top five style mistakes that you should avoid.
5. Socks with sandals
Okay, so we are starting off with the most obvious one here. But it’s a big mistake that needs to be addressed. Socks with sandals simply do not go, especially if it’s white socks. No matter where you’re going, what you’re wearing, if you have some socks on: do not reach for those sandals.
Instead: Go sockless with ALL sandals, or wear trainer socks with white sneakers as an alternative in the summer.
4. Loud Shirts
No, we’re not talking statement tees – you can pull those off no problem. What women hate to see on men is shirts with bright graphics, brash writing or – worst of the worst – flames on them. It’s not a good look, trust us, it never was a good look.
Instead: Wear plain shirts in pastel colours, or a designer t-shirt with a logo printed on the front instead of garish cartoons.
3. No Shirt
This is even more unforgivable than a loud shirt. I don’t care how hot it is. Unless you’re at the beach or the swimming pool, you need to wear a shirt. Walking through town with your pecks out isn’t making heads turn in the way you think it is, and whether you’re showing off a beer belly or a six pack – it’s a bad look either way.
Instead: Wear literally anything. Anything.
2. Too Skinny Jeans
This look has been seen more and more lately, especially with the likes of ‘Geordie Shore’ and ‘Love Island.’ If you’re struggling to bend your knees then your jeans are just too tight, and the rest of us don’t know where to look. Bad choice.
On the opposite scale, baggy jeans are also a bad look. As a guilty member of this fashion faux pas, I can assure you that the baggy jeans trend died in the 90s.
Instead: Wear jeans that fit, even skinny jeans should give you a small amount of breathing room.
1. Deep V-Neck T-Shirts
Remember when we were talking about wearing no shirt and I recommended you wear literally anything? Well, I didn’t mean it. A deep V-neck t-shirt is still a no-go. “Man cleavage” became popular five or so years ago, but it’s time for the trend to go.
Instead: We (the rest of the world) don’t want to see the tops of your pecks, and a regular t-shirt is a much safer choice.
We admit it can be a bit of a minefield when it comes to fashion, and there are lots more style mistakes that men can make. Such as wearing trainers with suits, wearing way too many accessories and having a limp, curling collar to mention a few.
Don’t worry. As long as you’re not breaking the big five above then we’re sure you’ll be doing something right – probably. Keep a look out for more tips on the Mainline Menswear blog to ensure you’re looking stylish 24/7.
